Excerpts & Conclusions

Excerpts from Dr. Steve Johnson´s Appraisal

“The Drobness Collection is a single, large, rich, diverse, major, integrated, homogeneous, significant, and comprehensive body of recorded sound.  The collection itself is unique.”

"The appraiser considers the property to be in good to excellent condition...  The property is of consistently very high auditory playback quality and in very good physical condition.”

“The collection is diverse.  Merely perusing the inventory and browsing through the descriptions indicates to a reader the variety of uses, purposes, functions, and technologies that amount to a virtual glossary of music of the genre and era.”

“The materials in the collection represent the extent of popular media culture, including both creative individuals and their creations and performances, during one of the most technologically dynamic eras in our cultural history.”

“In addition to providing unique resources to students and scholars, the collection contains sound properties valuable for such related interests as the history of music and sound recording.”

“The condition of the property is generally very good to excellent.”

“Most of the recorded sound materials under appraisal are rare for all practical purposes.”

“It is the appraiser’s considered opinion that the recordings in the collection under appraisal are of such widely-recognized significance that this factor renders them as desirable at the top of the collector market.”

Conclusion to the Appraisal

“It is…the conclusion of the appraiser that this collection is substantially greater in rarity, significance, condition, and overall value than other collections of similar materials known by the appraiser to have changed hands in similar or related subjects, use situations, and transactions…  The value would also benefit from an important value-enhancing characteristic, in the appraiser’s experience:  “trophy” premium, the added value of being a highly desirable collection for an institution or an individual to own, to protect, and to treasure.”
